Summary
Get a glimpse of what this case study is about, how E.ON Sweden leveraged smart meter innovation and AI-powered insights to help households better understand and optimize their energy consumption.
Challenge
As European nations undergo a massive smart meter revolution, Sweden has emerged as a pioneer by rolling out its second generation of smart infrastructure. In the wake of this rollout, E.ON Sweden recognized a critical window to empower households facing shifting energy markets. To help consumers mitigate rising costs, they needed a seamless way to transform complex, raw meter data into clear, actionable household insights without requiring professional installation.
Solution
In partnership with NET2GRID, E.ON introduced Elna™, a smart service integrated directly into the E.ON mobile app. Powered by proprietary EnergyAI® technology, the service pairs with a custom hardware dongle that unlocks high-resolution data measurements every 10 seconds. This setup provides users with appliance-level consumption breakdowns across 20 distinct categories, real-time usage graphs, and localized peer comparisons to isolate energy guzzlers.
Results
A multi-month study conducted by E.ON Sweden proved that the Elna service successfully drove down household energy usage and generated significant annual financial savings, particularly for homes with direct electric heating. The platform also achieved exceptional long-term user engagement and went on to win a prestigious Eurobest Award for its unique marketing campaign.
